Wolverine Hockey on win streak heading into Christmas

The hot streak continues! After a tough start to the season, the Wolverines have come together and are playing their best hockey yet. The Wolverines capped off 2010 with a three game winning streak. Picking up a win over St. Basils and two over Superior Heights, the Wolverines are heading into the new year with a full head of steam.

The Wolverines, led by Josh July, who has 15 points in 5 games, along with Sault Star Athlete of the Week honours, have started to find their offensive touch. The defense has made significant strides and Mitchell Hayward-Murray has been a dominant force in bewtween the pipes and has shown he is one of the elite goaltenders in high school hockey. The Wolverines have earned a much needed holiday rest and will return to action January 5th at 3:30 against the CASS Huskies at the John Rhodes.

Week Three WP Hockey

Week three of the high school hockey league has been a lose-win-lose strike for White Pines.

White Pines first game during week 3 occurred on Friday, November 5^th. The game took place in Desbarats, at CASS. Our defensive players were not doing very well during the first two periods letting in 5 goals. #2 Zack Evans started White Pines come back during the third period. Our offensive players then scored another 3 goals. Our other goals were scored by #12 Josh July, #14 Cody Anderson, and #17 Dakota Boisseneau. CASS took the win 5-4.

White Pines faced off against Korah on Monday, November 8^th. We took the lead during the beginning of the game, the score being 3-2. Our three goals were scored by #4 Nick Dupes, #12 Josh July, and #14 Cody Anderson. White Pines weathered a storm in the later part of the game to hold their lead and receive their win.

The Wolverines played their last game of week three on Wednesday, November 10^th against St. Mary’s. We lost 4-0, better luck next game boys!

White Pines Hockey

White Pines vs. CASS faced off at 5:30 p.m. on October 29^th at the Essar Center. After the 1^st period the game was tied 1-1, our first goal scored by #23 Aaron Vilaca, assisted by #11 Adam Schoch and #8 Ryan Vilaca. White Pines went on to take the lead in the second period scoring 4 goals, while CASS was behind only scoring 3.

During the first half of the second period there was little action, no goals being scored until 11:34. First goal in the second period scored by #14 Cody Anderson with no assists. Second goal in the second period was scored by #4 Nick Dupes, assisted by #12 Josh July, and #3 Jordan Hanifan. #10 Keegan Evoy, for the CASS Huskies, received a costly penalty for tripping at 10:10. White Pines scored the power play goal at 9:00 by #12 Josh July, assisted by #2 Zack Evans and #4 Nick Dupes. #23 Aaron Vilaca, scored his second goal of the game and the last in the second period.

The second power play goal of the game was scored in the third period by #2 Zack Evans, assisted by #23 Aaron Vilaca. The last White Pines goal of the game was at 5:41 and was scored by #17 Dakota Boissoneau assisted by #9 George DeFilice and #23 Aaron Vilaca. The CASS Huskies went on to win the game at 2:51, the score being 8-7. Both teams played an exceptional game, but there was certainly a lot more offense then there was defense.

Next game is on Wednesday, November 3^rd against Superior Heights.

The results are in! White Pines won their game against Superior Heights on Wednesday, Nobember 3^rd! #17 Dakota Boissoneau led off our victory with our first goal. #5 Josh Boisvenue scored our second goal of the game, while #4 Nick Dupes scored the last two of the 4 White Pines goals! We took victorious with a 4-3 win against Superior Heights! Way to go Wolverines!

Next game is on Friday, November 5^th at CASS.

Joey Mancuso East/West Classic

Hockey East/West takes place Saturday, October 23rd at the Essar Center. White Pines VS. St. Basils face off at 5:30 p.m. Come out and support your fellow Wolverines!

Tickets can be purchased in advance from any White Pines hockey players for $3.00 or at the doors for $4.oo. This money helps support your White Pines hockey team, so make sure you buy a ticket!

Wolverine Hockey Tryouts

The Wolverines hockey team will be holding tryouts for all interested players beginning next week. The ice times are as follows:

October 19th from 3:40 - 5:00 at the McMeeken
October 21st from 3:30 - 5:00 at the John Rhodes 1
East/West starting at 5:30 at the Essar Center
October 25th from 3:40 - 5:00 at the McMeeken

All players must wear full equipment on the ice, including full face masks and neck guards.

Interested players can see Mr. Cowan, Mr. S. Carlucci, Mr. M. Carlucci or Mr. Porco.

Victory For The Junior Ladies Wolverines

The junior ladies Wolverines won their 3rd game this year against Saint Marys last Thursday night. The score was 38-17, Ally Frayn was on fire this game with 11 points. Also great game for Karissa Zack and Emily Aleka. What a great way to begin the three day weekend. The junior ladies Wolverines would like to thank Mr. Zorzit for the delicious pizza and wings.

Junior Girls Basketball

The junior girl’s basketball has been off to a tremendous start, keeping a record of 2-1! The girls started their season in a tournament in Sudbury, they lost their first game against the best team in Sudbury and won their second and third. Back home, the ladies won their first season game against Superior Heights Steelhawks with a score of 44-25! Their next regular season game was against the Korah Colts who they also they beat with a 31-18 score! The girl’s played a tough game, and played hard, against St. Basils coming out with a score of 30-39 for the Saints. Congratulations to the girls, so far they are doing a wonderful job, they have made much improvement from last year! White Pines is very proud of you!

East West Football 2010

The annual East West football game, held September 10^th, was a phenominal success for White Pines. The team’s 22-8 win was an excellent start to what will be a great season for the senior boys. The stands were full with Wolverines showing their school spirit! During this hard playing game, Ben Muncaster came out with two touch downs and T-Plums pitched in with one touch down. I asked Ben Munc what he had to say about the game and he responded with, “Our team showed a lot of enthusiam out there.” And he’s right, our boys did show a lot of enthusiam on the field and they played a rightous game! I also asked T-Plums what he had to say about the game and he responded with, “ We really showed what we could do, and it all starts with the center.” Mitch Murray ran an outstanding P.A.T (point after touchdown), Travis Daniels had a nice interception during the game, and Ben Katajamaki and Kyle Marcinkowski performed some soild blocking during this exciting game. After all the team’s hard work and the students cheering and chanting, we ended the game winning it 22-8; way to go Wolverines!

Senior Girl’s Volleyball

The senior girls volleyball team is having a successful season thus far. The girls currently have a record of 4-3. The girls are steadily improving and hope to make some noise come playoff time. Recently the girls experienced tremendous success in finishing second at the Sault College Cougar Classic Tournament and receiving silver medals. This was the second year in a row that the girls won silver medals at this tournament. The girls have 5 matches left in their regular season before playoffs begin. Also exciting for the majority of the team is the upcoming March break trip to Hawaii where the girls will participate in a volleyball tournament and they will also experience the Hawaiian culture. It will be a trip they will never forget!! The girls are working very hard for their school and they are a dedicated special group of young athletes! Junior Girl’s Volleyball

Our Jr. Girl’s volleyball team for the 2010 season consists of 12 players 5 grade 10 students; Jen Russell, Shelby Lesage, Emily Gregoire, Karina Gagne, Jayme Jones and 7 grade nine students Ali Frayne, Chrystal Coneybear, Whitney Zack, Ali Holley, Laura Boissoneau, Emily Aleksa, and Reanne Zack. Our season started off a little rocky but is quickly showing improvement. Our most recent battle against Sir James Dunn showed testament that we are not a team to be reckoned with. We have 5 more games and the girls are ready and looking forward to the next challenger. I anticipate a productive and enjoyable second half of the season. At the end of the month we will venture to Sudbury for a tournament which I know the girls will enjoy.
