We are also looking for male students to shave their heads in an effort to support of our contribution to the cancer society and those who go through this unfortunate affair. We are fundraising by selling Livestrong wrist bands in the back of the cafeteria for only $3.00.

During the week of the presentation we will be painting nails to represent the various forms of cancer, such as pink for breast cancer. The cost will be $1.00 for five finger nails.

Those who are participating by cutting their hair will be going around the community asking for pledges and donations. Community hours will be handed available out to the students who are helping out. All the money raised will be put into the pot for the Relay for Life that White Pines has attented for the past few years. It all goes to our Algoma Cancer Society that helps families out finacially.

Come on White Pines, come on out and donate your hair to a good cause. Remeber our hair can grow back, but for others it may not.

On Thursday September 23rd, White Pines was fortunate to have a representative, named Shay, come in from M.A.D.D (mothers against drunk driving) to show us a presentation on what M.A.D.D is all about. The emotionally charged presentation was called Shattered. Many of our students walked away from that presentation with a little bit of more knowledge with what goes on with drunk driving whether it’s from the driver’s point of view, the parents or other family member’s point of view or even a friends point of view. We must think of others including ourselves before we get behind the wheel. There are reasons for laws that are made and we as citizens must obey them not only for our safety but for others safety as well.

As we saw in the video it is very difficult to lose someone as well as it is very difficult to coop with seeing either your daughter/son or friend not lose their life but become a vegetable. The presentation also mentioned other methods of getting home safely which included calling a cab, having a designated driver, calling a relative, taking a bus or even staying the night.

After the presentation Megan Woolner and I had the chance to interview Shay. We asked him what would be the most important message you are trying to get out to students and he replied with, “ Even though every day we are put under peer-pressure, people will respect you more for making a good decision for not driving impaired”. He left us off with, “Impaired driving, it’s a choice that you make. It’s a social choice that can affect so many other people.”

Remember White Pines, you are able to make a choice.
