Senior Football

by Mr. Zorzit - November 5, 2009

The senior football team, had a very successful year although they did not capture the cities’ high school championship.  In an area where we are one of the smallest schools population wise, the Wolverines held their own on the gridiron locally and also captured the hearts of two small communities in the state of Michigan as the boys of fall travelled to both Boyne City and Pickford for exhibition games.

With a record of 2-3, the green and white entered the playoffs locally and physically took on the arch rival and recently resurged  Korah Colts who were coming off their first win in five years.  The Wolverines defeated the Colts in quarter finals and took on the undefeated Sir James Dunn Eagles who were the favored team to win the league from the opening kickoff of 2009.  Going into the fourth quarter the Wolverines led the game, but a late touchdown by the Eagles nipped the Wolverines at the buzzer.  A great game by the senior boys and they left everything on the field.

Some personal highlights of the season were the selection of allstars by the coaches of the high school league and Brandon Hazelton, led all players in the league in tackles and was selected as an allstar and nominated for the Defensive Player of the year.  Running back Trevor Plumley was a unanimous selection at running back as he led the entire league in rushing amassing over 1000 yards including playoffs.  Calvin Mageau, our outstanding Offensive Tackle was also selected as an all star and is being sought by a number of Ontario Universities.  Lastly Sean Plumley, who also has an opportinity to play football at the next level was selected as an allstar at the receiver position.  Thanks to our many coaches for their help namely Mr. Caldbick, Mr. Harper, Mr. Arbour, and assistants Noah Rushon and Matt Premo for their work with the Football Wolverines.
